There is so much going on in the world today. There are emergencies here, sicknesses there, and then there is Covid-19 who has made life miserable for many.
But what if something happens to you in your home with no one else around but your child? Will they be able to help you? Will they be able to save your life? Can you trust that they will get you the help you need? You can finally lay those uncertain thoughts aside by teaching your child how to dial 911.
When I was a child, my mother used to practice with my brother and I on what to do in an emergency and how to respond. I must say that I really appreciate her efforts. We never did have to actually dial 911, but I am thankful that we still knew how.
With my boys, I usually throw this activity in after their morning work. We did it daily on some weeks and a few days a week during other weeks.
I spoke with them about 911 operators and the importance of their job. Before we started role playing, I did a walkthrough and explained to them how to respond. Each child had a chance to role play.
During one role play session I yelled: "Mom can't breathe! Mom can't breathe! Help her! Help her!" I fell to the floor and laid down.

As a group, the boys scrambled to figure out what to do. One child ran up to me and asked me questions to see if I would respond. One child grabbed a phone and pretended to dial 911. Later, I changed my role and responded to them as the 911 operator. I asked them a lot of important questions. If my younger children forgot what to do, their older brothers stepped in to help.
After role playing, I sat down for questions and asked them how they think they did and what they could have done better. The boys really liked this activity because it was very interactive.
All in all, I think this is a great activity to use in your home. With so many uncertainties in today's time, it would be helpful if your child could properly dial 911. Who knows, they may just save your life.
